This Victorian overmantle mirror dates from the nineteenth century and originates from England. Constructed from giltwood and plaster with a gold finish, the piece has an arched top, a moulded frame in an hourglass silhouette, and small side foot supports on the base. The mirror plate exhibits visible foxing across its surface, accompanied by signs of historical wear on the wooden and gesso frame. Measuring 130 cm high, 129 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, the item has substantial proportions. Positioned in a contemporary home today, the mirror would suit placement above the mantel in a living room, drawing room, or hallway. The substantial scale makes it suitable for hanging above a fireplace or mounting low against a wall in a traditional interior setting.

A 19th-century English overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. These mirrors usually feature a flat or subtly curved base with side foot supports, an arched top silhouette, and hand-applied gilding over wooden or plaster frames.

Gilt overmantel mirrors were traditionally made using a pine or lime wood base frame, coated with gesso, detailed with composition ornamentation or carved plaster, and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf.

Authentic period gilt mirrors typically display signs of natural oxidisation on the mirror plate, subtle wear or rubbing to the gilding showing red bole underneath, and hand-cut timber backing boards.

Interior designers frequently position large gilt mirrors above traditional fireplaces or minimalist modern mantels to create contrast. Placing them opposite windows maximizes natural light throughout the room.

Giltwood frames should be gently dusted using a soft, dry camel-hair brush. Avoid water, alcohol, or liquid cleaners, as moisture can dissolve original water gilding and damage delicate gesso work.
