Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Moulded composition detail on wire armature: late Victorian framing method.
Gilding rubbed through to pale ground on high points: decades of dusting.
Dark specks and clouding across the plate: old mirror silvering.
Urn finial flanked by laurel branches: Neoclassical revival style.

This late 19th-century pier glass exemplifies Neoclassical Revival style with French Chateau design influences. The rectangular wall mirror consists of a giltwood and composition frame finished in a bright gold colour, inset with mirror glass displaying natural foxing. Ornate Neoclassical motifs decorate the top, featuring a central urn cresting with curved side handles, flanked by sweeping laurel branch swags that extend outwards over the shoulders. Below this decorative cresting, the upper frame includes a rectangular plaque adorned with a relief emblem, set above fine bead moulding that runs along the inner edge of the glass. Small knocks appear on the frame surface, alongside untouched original condition showing no prior restoration. Measuring 126 cm high by 55 cm wide, the mirror offers a practical vertical profile suited for placement above the mantel in a living room, hallway, or dining space.

Neoclassical gilt mirrors from the late 19th century draw inspiration from classical antiquity, featuring symmetrical proportions, architectural crestings, classical urns, foliage swags, and beaded edge mouldings applied to a gilded timber or composition frame.

These mirrors were constructed using timber sub-frames overlaid with composition (compo) detail for intricate ornaments, covered in red or yellow bole clay, and finished with thin layers of genuine gold leaf applied via water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces display natural age signs such as micro-craquelure in the gesso, light wear exposing the underlying clay bole on raised edges, silvering oxidisation or light foxing on the glass mirror back, and hand-cut timber backing boards.

Positioning a gilt mirror above a clean-lined mantelpiece, console table, or hallway bench provides architectural structure and metallic contrast against modern paint finishes, drawing light across the room.

Gilt frames should only be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth. Water, chemical solvents, and liquid cleaners must be avoided as they dissolve water-gilded gesso and strip gold leaf.
