French gilt mirrors from the 18th and 19th centuries typically feature carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf or gesso, often displaying classical motifs such as acanthus leaves, egg-and-dart moulding, or rococo scrolls.

These frames were traditionally constructed from softwoods such as pine or oak, coated with layers of gesso and bole before the application of gold leaf. The mirrors themselves utilised early float glass or mercury glass techniques.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detailing rather than moulded resin, foxing or dark speckles within the mercury glass plate, and age-appropriate oxidisation and wear on the backboards and metallic finish.

Such pieces function effectively as focal points when mounted above a fireplace, paired against contemporary neutral walls, or simply leant against a wall to add verticality and reflected light to a minimalist space.

Maintain the frame by dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaning agents that can strip the delicate gold leaf. The glass requires careful cleaning with a minimal amount of glass cleaner applied directly to the cloth rather than the surface.
