Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

FAQs

Wheelback chairs emerged in England during the 19th century as a regional development of the traditional Windsor chair design. They gained popularity in farmhouses and provincial homes due to their sturdy construction and distinctive pierced splat.

These chairs typically feature a combination of native timbers such as elm for the saddle seats, ash for the bentwood hoops, and beech or oak for the turned legs and spindles. Construction relies on traditional wedged through-tenon joints and steam-bending methods.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age-related wear, hand-carved saddle seats with distinct adze marks, and variations in grain and colour across the timber. Examination of the underside often reveals hand-turned components and pegged joinery.

Mixing period wooden seating with a modern dining table creates a balanced, layered aesthetic that softens minimalist spaces. The warm tones and tactile grain of the timber add natural texture to contemporary dining rooms.

Maintain antique wooden chairs by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Periodically apply microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood and protect the original patina without sealing the surface.
