This George II walnut Chippendale wall mirror dates from the mid-18th Century in the Georgian period. The piece has warm brown timber with a parcel gilt slip and a gilt inner moulding, holding a rectangular mirror plate. The woodwork displays scrolled fretwork framing the plate, a scroll surmount with a central carved cresting motif showing pierced and gilt Prince of Wales feathers, and general marks, scuffs and old repairs to the delicate fretwork. The frame has an attractive patina. Measuring 63 cm high, 70 cm wide and 3 cm deep, the mirror works well hung above a sideboard in a living room, dining room or hallway interior today.

George II fretwork mirrors, dating from the mid-18th century, are defined by scrolled timber silhouettes around a rectangular glass frame, often embellished with parcel gilding and decorative cresting motifs.

These mirrors were typically crafted using walnut or mahogany veneers applied over a softwood pine frame, incorporating hand-carved detail, gold leaf gilding, and original mercury glass plates.

Authentic period mirrors display hand-sawn fretwork edges, hand-carved inner moulding, pine secondary backing boards showing natural age oxidisation, and irregular, soft reflections in the glass.

Position the mirror centrally above a console table or mantelpiece to create a focal point that introduces historic texture and warmth into a modern interior.

Dust the wood gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoid applying chemical cleaners near gilded sections, and keep the glass clean using a lightly dampened cloth.
