FAQs

A burr wood snuff box is a small lidded container carved from a tree growth, known as a burr, which features intricate, swirling grain patterns. These boxes were historically used to hold powdered tobacco, known as snuff, which was popular during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These items were crafted from dense timber growths such as elm, walnut, or ash burr. Artisans turned the wood on a lathe or hand-carved the pieces, meticulously fitting lids and applying wax or oil finishes to highlight the natural irregularities of the grain.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patination, tool marks, and wear patterns consistent with age. Genuine pieces typically exhibit natural shrinkage cracks, hand-cut joinery where applicable, and a deep, mellow lustre developed through handling over centuries.

This object can be displayed on a coffee table, bookshelf, or mantelpiece as a tactile decorative accent. It pairs well with other natural textures and acts as a focal point among books and ceramics.

Preserve the condition of wooden treen by keeping it away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme humidity fluctuations. Occasionally apply a microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood and maintain the protective barrier without damaging the historic finish.
