Gilt bronze, or ormolu, mounted with fine crystal or glass became exceptionally popular in 19th-century France during the Second Empire and Belle Epoque periods, often produced by esteemed makers such as Baccarat and mounted with hand-painted Limoges enamels for wealthy bourgeois and aristocratic clientele.

These decorative containers typically combine heavy-cut lead crystal or blown glass with cast and fire-gilt bronze mounts, frequently featuring inset painted enamel plaques crafted using traditional copper-plate fusing techniques.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the crispness of the bronze casting, the weight and hand-cut clarity of the glass, the presence of maker marks or acid etchings, and the fine brushwork and vitrification of the enamel inset.

This piece can be placed upon a dressing table, mantle, or console to introduce a touch of metallic warmth and historical texture, pairing effectively with both contemporary minimalist surfaces and traditional mahogany furniture.

Maintain the item by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners or chemical polishes on the gilt bronze and enamel surfaces to preserve the original patina and delicate metallic finish.
