This 18th century Georgian box takes the form of a rectangular wooden chest finished in a dark brown timber polish. The hinged top lid sits above a plain case, featuring a central brass keyhole escutcheon fitted with a key and a hanging cream-coloured fabric tassel, a lower storage drawer with a small recessed brass ring pull, and side brass carrying handles. The visual details include the warm grain of the mahogany, the polished dark wooden surfaces, and the bright metallic finish of the brass hardware. Measuring 23 cm high, 28 cm wide and 22 cm deep, the piece functions well as a decorative storage container on an office desk or library table. Its compact proportions allow it to sit on desktop surfaces to hold small documents, stationery items, or collection pieces while adding a traditional aesthetic to a room.

Georgian mahogany boxes were crafted during the 18th and early 19th centuries in Britain, serving functional storage purposes such as tea caddies, writing slopes, and jewellery chests. These items were designed using traditional cabinet-making techniques, utilising solid or veneered mahogany imported via established trade routes.

Craftsmen typically used dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass side handles, and keyhole escutcheons. Internal compartments and lower drawers were often fitted with fine timber linings or baize cloth.

Authentic Georgian pieces feature slightly irregular hand-cut dovetails, period iron or brass locks, natural timber shrinkage over time, and a warm aged patina. The presence of hand-planed underside boards and period-correct brass hardware further distinguishes genuine period items.

Small antique wooden boxes function well styled on a desk, sideboard, or bookshelf to provide textural contrast against contemporary backdrops. They serve both as decorative accent pieces and as functional concealed storage for small household items.

Dust the timber surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the patina. Avoid placing the box near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish bleaching.
