This nineteenth-century Swedish Gustavian pier mirror originates from the Neoclassical period and stands 184 cm high by 69 cm wide. The tall rectangular frame consists of dark brown mahogany combined with bright gold giltwood and contains an original two-part glass mirror plate. The broken arched pediment holds a carved and gilded urn finial at the top, accompanied by foliate carving and trailing laurel swags down the sides. Below the pediment, a frieze displays a continuous chain of circular rosettes with flower heads, flanked by side ornaments. The bevel-edged glass is surrounded by a gilt slip featuring an outer ribbed moulding, while the base section exhibits additional carved swags and tails. Ideal for placement on a narrow wall space within a hallway, drawing room or bedroom, the mirror leans gracefully against a vertical surface to reflect light and expand interior dimensions. The contrasting dark timber and brilliant metallic highlights complement traditional or transitional domestic interiors. The design suits settings where vertical architectural elements enhance proportions, serving both a practical reflective function and a decorative architectural purpose in contemporary heritage homes.

A pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror historically designed to mount on the wall section between two windows, known as a pier. Originating in the late seventeenth century, these mirrors were positioned above pier tables to reflect natural light into living spaces.

Traditional Swedish Gustavian mirrors feature hand-carved timber or mahogany frameworks adorned with sculpted gesso detailing finished in gold leaf gilding. The glass panels were historically hand-cut mercury glass or silvered plates inset within decorative moulded borders.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved decorative motifs such as urns, laurel swags, rosettes, and ribbon cresting. Inspection of the reverse often reveals hand-sawn wooden backing boards, square-cut fasteners, and characteristic age-related oxidation on the mirror glass.

A tall pier mirror can be positioned above a console table, anchored in an entryway, or mounted between windows to maximize architectural proportions. The combination of dark timber and gilded ornamentation pairs with both minimal contemporary palettes and traditional schemes.

Dust the wooden and gilt framework using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or liquid polishes on gold leaf areas. Clean the glass panel separately using a soft cloth dampened with glass cleaner, ensuring no liquid touches the gilded perimeter.
