Eighteenth-century giltwood mirrors draw inspiration from the Baroque and Rococo movements, characterised by ornate, asymmetrical carvings and opulent gold leaf finishes applied to a carved wood base, typically pine or gesso-coated timber.

These pieces were meticulously constructed using hand-carved softwoods such as pine or lime, layered with gesso, and meticulously gilded with genuine gold leaf over a red bole base layer.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-carved details, the presence of red bole beneath worn areas of gold leaf, hand-beveled glass with minor oxidisation, and traditional joinery methods on the reverse.

Interior designers frequently use these ornate pieces as focal points above a contemporary fireplace or console table to create an intentional juxtaposition between historic craftsmanship and minimalist modern design.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and dusting gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without using chemical cleaners or water.
