FAQs

Nineteenth-century gilt wood mirrors were heavily influenced by earlier periods such as the Rococo, Baroque, and Neoclassical eras, often produced to reflect light and enhance the grandeur of formal reception rooms in British homes.

These mirrors typically feature a hand-carved wooden base overlaid with a fine layer of gesso and plaster, which was then meticulously gilded with gold leaf before burnishing.

Authenticity is determined by examining the patination of the gold leaf, the presence of hand-applied gesso over carved softwood, foxing or oxidisation on the original mercury or silvered glass, and traditional joinery on the rear wooden backing frame.

Positioning a large gilded mirror opposite a window maximises natural light, while contrasting its ornate, traditional craftsmanship against minimalist or industrial architectural backdrops adds visual depth.

Gilt wood surfaces are extremely delicate; they should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, keeping them away from direct sunlight, moisture, and chemical cleaning products to prevent flaking of the gesso.
