Description

Dimensions:W: 133cm (52.4")H: 84cm (33.1")

Beautiful early 19th century French gilt mirror in excellent condition.

It dates from the very early 1800s and has its original mercury glass with no scratches. Mercury glass was not made after 1840 and gives a sparkle like no other.

It has its lovely real gilt (gold leaf) on gesso frame with stunning floral detail and no chips.

It has all its original backboards.

This mirror can be hung landscape as in the photos or portrait. Hung portrait it could not rest directly on a surface, it would need to be fixed to a wall because the central ornate gesso pieces protrude at either end.

French antique mirrors, particularly from the 18th and 19th centuries, are characterised by ornate carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf, often featuring classical motifs such as acanthus leaves, scrolls, and crests.

These pieces typically feature hand-carved wooden frames finished with gesso and gold leaf. The glass is often historical mercury glass or early silvered glass, held in place by wooden backing boards secured with old-style fixings.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-carved detailing with natural wear to the gilding, foxing or dark spots within the mercury glass plate, and period-appropriate joinery and backboards showing genuine ageing.

An antique gilt mirror can serve as a striking focal point when hung above a mantelpiece or placed atop a sideboard, creating a deliberate contrast between contemporary minimalism and historical craftsmanship.

Preservation involves keeping the mirror away from direct sunlight and high humidity. The frame should be dusted gently with a dry, soft cloth, avoiding commercial chemical cleaners on both the fragile gilding and the delicate antique glass.
