French gilt mirrors, particularly those from the 18th and 19th centuries, originated during periods of high craftsmanship under royal patronage, heavily influenced by the Baroque and Rococo movements which favoured ornate, asymmetrical designs and gold leaf application.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from carved softwood or hardwood substrates, layered with gesso, and meticulously hand-gilded with gold or silver leaf, often featuring mercury glass plates with characteristic oxidisation and foxing.

Authenticity is identified by examining the backboards for age-related timber shrinkage, hand-cut nails or screws, the weight and composition of the frame, and the presence of handmade glass with minor imperfections rather than modern float glass.

Interior designers frequently use large antique mirrors to bounce natural light around contemporary spaces, often leaning them casually against a wall to contrast classical ornamentation with minimalist architecture.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding all liquid cleaners or chemical polishes which can strip the delicate metallic leaf, and maintaining stable room humidity to protect the wooden substrate.
