This 19th-century Rococo Revival wall mirror belongs to the 19th century and is made from giltwood, gesso, and glass with a gold finish. The frame displays elaborate openwork carving, rising C-scrolls, spreading leaves, scrolling foliage, rocaille decoration on the outer edge, and an asymmetrical design centred by a hanging garland of flowers that falls to turning leaves and C-scrolls surrounding a shell centre, along with an integrated base bracket and foxed glass showing age-related spots. The mirror measures 78 cm high, 44 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep, making it well-suited for mounting in a narrow wall space in a hallway, bedroom, or living room to add a decorative French Chateau accent. Visible details include the antique gold finish on the carved wooden frame, the aged dark patina within the recessed decorative mouldings, and the vertical division line visible in the original mirror plate. The structure includes an upper hanging loop at the top for wall suspension and an integrated shelf bracket at the lower section.

Rococo Revival mirrors from the 19th century draw design inspiration from 18th-century French Rococo styles, featuring asymmetrical curves, ornate acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, floral motifs, and elaborated pierced crestings.

These frames were typically crafted from carved softwood, such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso plaster, smoothed, and then decorated with thin gold leaf applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age including natural oxidation or foxing on the silvered mirror glass, fine cracking (craquelure) in the gesso surface, hand-carved wood backing boards, and light wear exposing the red or grey clay bole beneath the gold leaf.

Position the mirror on a plain painted accent wall above a console table, fireplace mantel, or hallway bench to allow the detailed gilt framework to contrast with contemporary decor.

Dust the frame regularly with a soft, dry artist brush or feather duster. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes, as moisture can dissolve the water-soluble gesso base and lift the delicate gold leaf.
