Description

Pair Edwardian cigar humidors in walnut, and in lovely original condition. The larger one is 26cm wide and the matching, smaller one is 18cm wide.

They are made of figured walnut and on the top of each is inlaid a central oval figured walnut panel surrounded by a checkerboard inlay.

Both boxes are lined in cedar, but the interior of the smaller one is dished, making it easier to remove the contents.

The larger one is certainly for cigars, the smaller could be for cheroots, or maybe cigarettes.

These are top quality pieces, made to the highest standards and I am surprised there isn't a maker's mark in evidence as they are certainly made by a top quality craftsman.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Dating from the reign of King Edward VII (19011910), cigar humidors from this era reflect the refined smoking culture of the period, often crafted as high-quality desktop accessories for gentlemens studies and smoking rooms.

These pieces typically feature solid timber carcasses with decorative veneers such as mahogany, walnut, or coromandel, complemented by fine stringing inlay, brass hinges, and often cedar-lined interiors to maintain proper moisture levels for tobacco.

Authentic items show period-appropriate construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional shellac or French polish finishes, period brass hardware, and genuine timber ageing rather than modern synthetic adhesives or printed veneers.

An antique wooden box provides a tactile focal point when styled on a bookshelf, coffee table, or desk, adding warmth, historical texture, and sophisticated organisation to contemporary or traditional living spaces.

Maintain timber humidors out of direct sunlight and away from extreme temperature fluctuations, cleaning them periodically with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally feeding the wood with appropriate microcrystalline wax or furniture polish.
