This Victorian overmantle mirror dates from 1880 and possesses a pine and gesso construction finished in silver leaf with a distinct silver colour. The arched frame incorporates detailed twist moulding around the edges, alongside delicate floral carvings along the top and protruding side feet at the base that support the structure. The original glass plate is housed within this decorative surround, exhibiting an overall metallic sheen with visible ageing texture along the borders. Measuring 105.5 cm high and 82.5 cm wide, the mirror functions practically above the mantel in a traditional living room, dining space or hallway. Its classic shape and reflective surface bring a sense of light and proportion to domestic interiors, fitting seamlessly into English Country House schemes.

An overmantel mirror from this period is designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring a flat base, an arched top, and decorative moulding tailored to Victorian and Regency reception rooms.

These mirrors were constructed using a timber frameoften pine or oakcovered in plaster gesso moulding, finished with genuine silver leaf gilding, and fitted with mercury-backed or early silver-backed glass plates.

Authentic period examples display original softwood backboards, subtle oxidisation or foxing on the glass mirror plate, hand-carved gesso detailing, and natural wear or tarnishing along the high points of the silvered finish.

Positioning an arched silvered mirror above a fireplace or a large console table maximizes natural light reflection and provides an architectural focal point in both minimalist neutral rooms and traditional period spaces.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or brush, taking care to avoid liquid spray cleaners or abrasive polishes that can degrade delicate silver leaf finish and gesso detailing.
