Description

A very well matched set of six mid 19th century (circa 1840) yew wood low back Windsor armchairs, five of the chairs matching with one very similar additional chair all of superb patina from the Rockley area of Nottinghamshire.

This set of chairs each consist of a hoop back leading down to a central pierced splat of stylised fleur de lys decoration with three turned spindles to either side.

The arms being supported by turned arm supports leading down to shaped elm seats supported by four turned legs joined with a crinoline stretcher.

These chairs are in excellent condition for age with evidence of some old repairs (which is to be expected), are of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Examples of similar chairs can be found in the book 'The English Regional Chair' by Bernard D. Cotton pages 182-183

The sizes of these chairs do vary due to them being handmade and also wood moves over a period of years.

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular woodworking traditions where individual components like legs and spindles were turned on a lathe and fitted into a solid wooden seat.

Authentic chairs typically feature a combination of native hardwoods such as yew, elm, ash, and beech, constructed using traditional wedged tenon joints and steam-bent components.

Authentication relies on examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, construction pegging, wear patterns on the seats, and consistent patination appropriate to the nineteenth century.

These chairs provide textural contrast when paired with contemporary dining tables, or they can function as standalone accent seating within a minimalist or eclectic scheme.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight or heat sources, and occasionally treating the timber with traditional beeswax to nourish the wood surface.
