This large wall mirror dates from 1850 and follows a French Chateau style. The frame is constructed from giltwood and gesso, finished in a reflective gold colour, and surrounds a central glass mirror plate. The ornate wooden frame displays extensive decorative detailing, including prominent acanthus leaf carvings, elaborate scrollwork cresting along the top edge, and delicate floral garlands trailing down the sides alongside a beaded border. The exterior surface shows visible rubbing and distress marks across the gilding, revealing darker underlayers through the gold finish. Measuring 168 cm high by 140 cm wide, the piece operates on a substantial scale. It is suited for placement in a formal living room, hallway, or dining space, typically positioned above a mantelpiece or mounted centrally on a prominent wall as a statement architectural feature.

French Rococo overmantel mirrors originated in the 18th century, characterised by elaborate scrollwork, acanthus leaf motifs, cresting designs, and gilded frames engineered to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece to reflect ambient room light.

Antique mirrors were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and finished with water-gilding or oil-gilding using gold leaf over a clay base.

Authentic period examples often exhibit subtle wear revealing reddish or yellow bole clay beneath the gold leaf, minor glass foxing, and visible hand-planed timber backboards fixed with historic square-headed fasteners.

Positioning a large gilded mirror as a focal point above a mantelpiece or console table creates spatial depth, enhances natural light reflections, and provides visual contrast alongside contemporary furnishings.

Frames should be dusted using a dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners which dissolve traditional water-gesso finishes; glass cleaners should be applied sparingly via a microfibre cloth rather than sprayed direct onto the surface.
