Sold 22 October 2025 · Hand of Glory
This “Victorian Shell Back Armchair” found a buyer.

It was listed by Hand of Glory. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A very pretty antique Victorian shell back armchair, circa 1870, the serpentine shaped sprung seat with central carved detailing and raised on scroll supports raised on original brass and porcelain castors. Upholstered in a peach coloured damask fabric with rope detailing.

In good condition throughout, the seat and springs are good. The fabric is a little grubby in places and would benefit from a steam clean but is very useable. I can however arrange re-covering and supply fabric if required - please get in touch for further details.

A Victorian shell back armchair is a period seating option characterised by its fluted, scalloped backrest that resembles a seashell, popular during the 19th century for drawing rooms and boudoirs.

These chairs typically feature a sturdy timber frame made from hardwoods like mahogany or walnut, traditional horsehair or coil spring stuffing, and fine silk, damask, or velvet upholstery.

Authentic pieces often exhibit traditional hand-tied coil springs, period joinery, aged timber patination on the cabriole legs, and hand-stitched detailing rather than modern staples.

Pair this piece with minimalist modern surroundings to create a striking focal point, or use it as an accent seat in a bedroom or reading nook to introduce texture and historic charm.

Preserve the fabric by keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, vacuum gently with a soft brush attachment, and consult a professional restorer for structural or textile repairs.
