Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century French overmantle mirror presents a tall arched frame in gold giltwood and gesso with original glass showing characteristic foxing from age. The ornate cresting features a central urn flanked by detailed scrollwork embellishments, complemented by delicate beaded moulding and unusual corner details along the uprights. Measuring 159 cm high, 150 cm wide and 10 cm deep, the frame retains a very tidy appearance following workshop cleaning and past refinishing, while showing minimal historic repairs. Position this piece above a living room mantelpiece or as a statement wall hanging in a hallway, where the reflective surface enhances natural light. The substantial proportions suit traditional interior schemes, creating depth and a classic focal point in a reception room or bedroom. Wall mounting hardware allows straightforward installation to masonry or stud partitions.

FAQs

An overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries to reflect light and enhance room proportions.

Traditional 19th-century gilt mirrors feature hand-carved wooden frames coated in gesso plaster before being covered in gold leaf or gilt finish, paired with reflective glass mirror plates.

Authentic period pieces typically feature carved backboards, signs of light oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, and subtle wear showing the underlying clay bole beneath the gilding.

Position the mirror central above a modern fireplace, sideboard, or console table to create an architectural focal point that balances historic detail with contemporary decor.

Dust the frame regularly with a dry, soft feather duster or microfibre cloth, ensuring no liquid cleaners or damp materials touch the sensitive gesso and gold leaf finish.
