This William IV nineteenth-century writing slope belongs to the nineteenth-century period in the William IV style. The piece is constructed from dark brown figured rosewood with a polished finish, and incorporates metal hardware, a metal key, brass hinges, and a white mother of pearl cartouche inscribed with a name and the date 1835. The sloping hinged lid is fitted with a keyhole escutcheon and an inlaid plaque, displaying the distinctive grain patterns of the timber. Measuring 10 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 25.4 cm deep, the slope sits flat and true on any surface. In a modern home, this piece functions well on an office desk or library table to store stationery or function as a portable writing surface. The hinged lid opens to a working original lock, revealing compartments and a pen tray, while the original leather writing surface folds back for additional storage space beneath. The construction includes minor shrinkage to the lid and minor surface marks from use, preserving its historical character while remaining fully functional for daily use.

Produced during the 1830s, William IV writing slopes served as portable workstations, allowing individuals to store stationery and write correspondence while away from a permanent desk.

These boxes were constructed from hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, frequently featuring brass hardware, mother-of-pearl escutcheons, and leather or velvet interior writing surfaces.

Authentic period pieces display early 19th-century joinery, hand-cut dovetails, aged metal hardware, period lock mechanisms, and light oxidisation on metal elements.

Placing a writing slope on an office desk, library shelf, or console table introduces architectural weight and historical interest to modern study spaces.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying beeswax, while keeping the item away from direct heat and sunlight.
