FAQs

Baroque style mirrors are characterized by dramatic ornamentation, elaborate scrolls, acanthus leaf carvings, and deep relief work designed to create a sense of movement and grandeur.

These mirrors typically feature a carved wooden base, often pine or gesso-coated hardwoods, finished with applied gold leaf or composition metal leaf using traditional water-gilding or oil-gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces generally show signs of age such as foxing or oxidation on the mirror plate, hand-carved detailing with minor tool marks, and older backboards secured with period fixings.

An ornate gilt mirror works well as a statement focal point when contrasted against minimalist modern walls, or placed above a sleek mantelpiece to add architectural depth and reflected light.

Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or excessive moisture which can lift the delicate gold leaf layer.
