This nineteenth-century French Baroque Revival wall mirror measures 40 cm high, 36 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. The piece consists of a rectangular glass plate held within an elaborate giltwood and gesso frame finished in a bright gold colour. The ornate decoration includes floral mouldings with rosebuds and fruits, corner scrolls, a textured cross-hatched ground, and a beaded inner border surrounding the glass. In a modern interior, this mirror suits placement above a mantelpiece in a living room, drawing room, or hallway to reflect light and add a traditional French chateau aesthetic. The frame shows very minor losses to the finish, and the replacement mirror glass is in good overall condition. It hangs securely on a wall using integrated hardware.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster. Never apply water, commercial glass cleaner, or liquid polish directly to gilt surfaces, as moisture dissolves water-gesso grounds and damages delicate gold leafing.

A gilt mirror creates an effective visual anchor when mounted above a fireplace, console table, or sideboard. Positioning the ornate gold finish against contemporary matte walls or minimalist furnishings provides striking texture and architectural contrast.

Authentic period examples display natural wear where the underlying clay bole or wood shows through the gold leaf, particularly on high points. Look for hand-cut joinery on the timber reverse, subtle imperfections in hand-blown or silvered glass plates, and historic oxidation.

These frames were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso (a mixture of chalk and glue), and finished with red or yellow clay bole. Micro-thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before glass plate installation.

French Baroque mirror design, originating in the seventeenth century and revived throughout the nineteenth century, is characterised by architectural symmetry, dramatic ornamentation, and heavy gilded framing. Frames often feature elaborate botanical motifs, C-scrolls, and textured ground patterns designed to reflect ambient candlelight.
