French wingback armchairs, often related to the bergere style, evolved during the 17th and 18th centuries to protect sitters from drafts in large, unheated rooms.

Authentic pieces typically feature solid hardwood frames, hand-carved details, traditional joinery, and horsehair or cotton stuffing beneath silk, velvet, or linen upholstery.

Authentication relies on examining tool marks on the wood, signs of age-related patina in the paint or finish, hand-forged tacks, and period-appropriate joinery techniques.

Pairing these chairs with minimalist modern furniture or neutral surroundings creates a balanced focal point that highlights their historical craftsmanship.

Keep upholstered furniture out of direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, and gently clean wooden frames with a dry, soft cloth while avoiding harsh chemical treatments.
