FAQs

French giltwood mirrors gained prominence during the Baroque and Rococo periods, particularly under the reign of Louis XV, characterised by asymmetrical scrolling, floral motifs, and lavish use of gold leaf.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from carved softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with gesso, and meticulously hand-gilded with thin sheets of gold leaf.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-carved details, the presence of aged gesso with fine crackle, foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass, and hand-cut joinery on the reverse wooden frame.

Integrating an ornate gilt mirror into contemporary spaces creates a striking focal point, often positioned above a minimalist fireplace mantel or hung opposite a window to amplify natural light.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a soft, dry feather duster or microfibre cloth, avoiding all liquid cleaners, moisture, and chemical sprays which can damage the fragile gold leaf surface.
