Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

A cartouche mirror features a frame shaped like a scroll or tablet with rolled-up edges, a design heavily influenced by 18th-century Rococo aesthetics and revived during the Victorian era.

These pieces are typically constructed using a carved wood or composition base coated in layers of gessoa plaster-like binderthen hand-gilded with gold leaf or metallic powder.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit fine crackling in the gesso, hand-applied gold leaf showing subtle wear, oxidation on the original mirror plate, and hand-carved wooden structural elements behind the frame rather than modern resin.

Placing an antique gilt mirror above a minimalist console table or modern fireplace creates a striking juxtaposition, adding warmth, reflective light, and historic contrast to clean, contemporary spaces.

Gilt and gesso surfaces are extremely delicate and water-soluble; they should only be dusted gently with a dry, soft feather duster or microfiber cloth, avoiding all liquid cleaners and chemical polishes.
