Victorian button-back armchairs, popular during the 19th century, are characterised by their deep tufted upholstery, curved silhouettes, and comfortable, low-slung seating designed for formal reception rooms and parlours.

These chairs typically feature robust iron or hardwood frames, hand-tied coil springs, horsehair or wool stuffing, and are covered in luxurious textiles such as wool, damask, or velvet.

Authentic pieces often display hand-turned wooden legs, original castors, traditional hand-tacked upholstery methods, and wear patterns consistent with age, alongside period-specific joinery and frame construction.

A Victorian armchair acts as a striking statement piece in contemporary settings, contrasting sharply against minimalist walls or adding rich texture and historical depth when paired with neutral or monochromatic colour palettes.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment to remove dust, protecting the fabric from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and consulting a professional restorer for deep cleaning or reupholstery.
