Description:?

This is a fine quality antique English single Georgian dining chair, solid mahogany, in the style of the Chippendale period, with a newly upholstered red leather seat, in good condition.  Ideal for use as an office / desk or occasional chair around the home. This single George III chair is constructed of top-quality solid mahogany and features a shaped top rail, with a finely executed pierced central fretwork back splat, decorated with an embossed central floral cartouche. The back splat is flanked by vertical moulded rails, securing the seat frame, which is decorated with twin-moulding.  The Georgian dining chair features a drop-in seat.  The chair frame has been constructed in the traditional manner, with mortise and tenon joints, finished with pegged dowels. The seat has been newly upholstered in top quality dark red leather, finished with traditional hessian backing to the underside - it is therefore in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seat is very comfortable and provides ample support (you do not sink into the seat).  The Georgian dining chair is constructed with moulded chamfered block legs to the front and sabre legs to the rear, united by ‘H’ stretchers for additional strength.

The Chippendale style emerged during the mid-to-late 18th century, inspired by the designs of cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, known for combining Gothic, Rococo, and Chinese influences into refined mahogany furniture.

Georgian chairs were traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods like solid mahogany, utilizing mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved details, and upholstered drop-in seats secured with webbing and horsehair stuffing.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct timber patination, hand-cut joinery showing tool marks, traditional timber shrinkage, and specific construction nuances characteristic of 18th-century workshop production.

An antique mahogany chair adds architectural contrast and historical depth when paired with clean-lined contemporary tables or used as a standalone statement piece in a minimalist workspace.

Maintain mahogany furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
