Description

A fantastic antique Georgian inlaid mahogany table top mirror. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1800-1810 period.

The quality is superb, this is a large and impressive size. The mirror has a shield shaped frame, it is held by scrolled supports and stands on a beautifully shaped base. The mahogany has lovely inlaid satin wood borders, there are high quality brass fixtures holding the mirror in place and a brass finial at the top of the mirror. The mirror can be tilted and also removed for ease of transport.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor historical wear and patina remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Georgian mirrors from the 18th and early 19th centuries typically feature classical proportions, fine timbers such as mahogany, and understated decorative elements like stringing or inlaid medallions.

Cabinet makers predominantly used solid mahogany, often complemented by secondary softwoods like pine, along with contrasting inlay veneers such as boxwood or ebony, and brass adjustment screws.

Authenticity is indicated by period joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, foxed or wavy old glass with silver degradation, hand-turned brass fittings, and natural patina on the wood surface.

Placing this piece on a chest of drawers, sideboard, or desk introduces warmth and historical character, contrasting effectively against modern minimalist furniture.

Maintain the piece by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding liquid cleaners on antique mirror plates, and occasionally treating the timber with traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
