The William IV period, spanning roughly from 1830 to 1837, bridges late Regency and early Victorian aesthetics, characterised by robust proportions, bold scrolling motifs, and heavy use of dark exotic timbers like rosewood and mahogany.

Frames from this era were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, often featuring hand-carved dimensional scrollwork and applied mouldings assembled over a secondary timber base, housing silvered sheet glass.

Authenticity is assessed through original glass foxing or oxidisation, hand-cut joinery, old pine or mahogany backing boards, and the distinct heavy grain patterns and rich patina characteristic of genuine period rosewood.

Placing an ornate wooden mirror against a minimalist or neutrally painted wall creates a striking focal point, balancing historical texture with clean modern lines.

Maintain antique mirrors by avoiding direct sunlight, keeping them away from moisture fluctuations, dusting the carved frame with a soft dry brush, and cleaning the glass gently with a cloth rather than spraying liquid directly onto the silvering.
