Description

A beautiful antique French carved gilt wood armchair, dating from around the 1860-1880 period.

This is of very good quality, with gorgeous carving throughout. It sits on turned and fluted legs, with acanthus leaf carving and scrolled armrests. The proportions are very generous and this is very comfortable.

The gilt finish has just the right amount of wear, the frame is solid and perfectly distressed with a lovely patina. We have just had this re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric.

Depth – 21 inches , 53 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Louis style armchairs, spanning periods such as Louis XIV, XV, and XVI, are characterised by classical symmetry, intricate hand-carved wood details, exposed frames, and graceful cabriole or tapered fluted legs.

These chairs are typically constructed from solid hardwoods like beech or oak, featuring hand-applied gold leaf or gilt gesso finishes, traditional joinery, and horsehair or cotton stuffing beneath silk or velvet upholstery.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detailing with natural irregularities, genuine gilt wear showing the underlying bole or wood, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and aged patina rather than uniform modern metallic paint.

An antique gilt wood armchair can serve as a striking accent piece in a contemporary setting by pairing it with neutral walls, minimalist modern furnishings, and simple textured fabrics to balance its ornate craftsmanship.

Preserve gilt wood by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, using a soft dry microfibre cloth for dusting, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the wood and gesso from cracking.
