Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, characterised by a solid wooden seat into which the legs and back spindles are directly inserted.

Traditional Windsor chairs typically combine multiple timber species, using flexible woods like ash or yew for bent parts, elm for the carved seat, and harder woods like beech or birch for the turned legs and spindles.

Authentic pieces display hand-turned components, wedge-tenon joinery, tool marks from adzes on the seat, and natural wear patterns consistent with age rather than artificial distressing.

Such pieces function well as sculptural display items in living spaces or nurseries, adding historical warmth and texture when paired with contemporary minimalist surroundings.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent splitting, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood surface.
