Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Napoleon III style, also known as Second Empire, flourished in France during the reign of Emperor Napoleon III from 1852 to 1870. It was characterised by an eclectic revival of historicism, drawing inspiration from Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI designs while incorporating new industrial manufacturing techniques.

These pieces typically feature internal frames constructed from native hardwoods such as beech or walnut, supported by hand-tied coil springs and traditional stuffing layers like horsehair and hessian. The exposed woodwork often includes ebonised finishes, hand-turned legs, and brass castors.

Authentic pieces from this era can be identified through traditional joinery, handmade internal webbing, hand-forged or early machine-made fixings, and period-appropriate wood turnings. Inspecting the underside for wear, patination on exposed timber, and traditional upholstery tacking also aids verification.

These chairs can be integrated into contemporary spaces by pairing them with minimalist furniture to highlight their historical form. Recovering them in modern textiles or textured linens bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design sensibilities.

Preservation involves keeping the chairs away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber warping and textile fading. Regular vacuuming with a soft brush attachment removes dust, while professional conservation ensures the internal padding and fabric remain stable.
