Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Napoleon III style originated in France during the Second Empire in the mid-to-late 19th century. Seating from this era is characterised by comfortable, heavily padded frames, elaborate deep buttoning, and decorative curved outlines such as fishtail or flared backs.

Frames were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as beech, oak, or walnut. Internal upholstery relied on hand-tied steel coil springs, natural webbing, jute, and horsehair padding, finished with brass castors on the front legs.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved hardwood frames with pegged joinery, low seat proportions, original brass castors, and hand-tufted upholstery. Traces of historical fillings like horsehair beneath the lining fabric also indicate original construction.

Position the pair opposite a contemporary sofa to create a balanced conversation area, or place them flanking a fireplace. The sculptural silhouettes complement minimalist architecture while introducing texture and historical form.

Vacuum the fabric regularly using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust build-up within the deep buttoning. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean, dry cloth, and apply natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the wooden legs.
