Giltwood mirrors gained prominence during the Baroque and Rococo periods in France, particularly under the reign of Louis XIV, XV, and XVI, when elaborate gold leaf craftsmanship signified wealth and status.

These mirrors are typically constructed from hand-carved softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso, and meticulously finished with thin sheets of metallic gold leaf applied over bole.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as minor losses to the gesso, oxidation or foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, and hand-tooled carving marks rather than modern mouldings.
