Ladder back chairs feature a backrest composed of horizontal wooden slats resembling the rungs of a ladder. Originating in rural workshops across Europe and Britain, they became a staple of domestic seating from the 17th century onwards due to their practical construction and ergonomic design.

Traditional construction typically involved locally sourced native hardwoods such as ash, oak, elm, or fruitwood. Joinery relied on mortise and tenon joints, often secured with wooden pegs, while seats were frequently constructed from solid timber planks or woven rush and split ash.

Authentication relies on examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, wear patterns, and construction anomalies. Hand-carved elements, period-appropriate joinery without modern fasteners, and natural oxidisation of the wood surface help determine genuine age.

These versatile seats provide warmth and texture when contrasted against modern minimalist dining tables or used as a solitary accent piece in a hallway. Their understated silhouette bridges historic and contemporary aesthetics effectively.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and finish degradation. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of appropriate natural wax help maintain the protective patina.
