FAQs

Antique mirrors featuring painted and gilt wooden frames were popular across Europe from the 18th century onwards, often reflecting neoclassical or baroque design influences found in period townhouses and country estates.

Authentic period mirrors typically utilise carved softwood or hardwood frames, finished with layers of gesso, historic paint pigments, and gold leaf gilding, enclosing hand-silvered glass plates.

Authenticity is determined by examining the foxing and oxidisation on the glass plate, the hand- cut construction of the wooden frame, and the presence of historic crackle or wear in the paint layers.

An antique mirror adds character and reflects natural light when hung above a mantelpiece, paired with minimalist contemporary furnishings to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Frames should be dusted gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals, while glass plates can be cleaned sparingly using a neutral cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly.
