Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A Regency overmantel mirror is a large horizontal mirror designed specifically to be hung above a fireplace mantelpiece, popular during the British Regency era in the early 19th century, typically characterised by classical proportions and neoclassical motifs.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed using a timber frame, often pine or gesso-coated wood, which was then water-gilded or oil-gilded with genuine gold leaf applied over a prepared bole layer.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-carved wooden elements, traditional gesso application, foxed or hand-silvered mercury glass plates, and construction joints appropriate to the early 19th century rather than modern fixings.

Pairing a heavy gilt mirror with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a balanced interior, allowing the historical piece to act as a focal point above a fireplace or anchoring a main living space.

Gilded surfaces are extremely fragile and should only be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, ammonia, or commercial glass sprays that could strip the delicate gold leaf.
