Mashrabiya woodwork originated as traditional turned wood window screens in Islamic architecture, which later influenced Western aesthetic movements such as the Arts and Crafts and Liberty & Co designs during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These pieces typically utilise dense hardwoods such as walnut or beech, featuring intricately turned bobbin or spindle elements combined with geometric micro-mosaic inlay work made from bone, mother-of-pearl, or contrasting woods.

Authentic period pieces display hand-turned wooden spindles with slight individual variations, traditional joinery methods, genuine age-related oxidisation on the mirror plate, and natural discoloration or yellowing of the bone or mother-of-pearl inlay.

An ornate piece like this functions effectively as a focal point when contrasted against minimalist walls, or placed within eclectic and bohemian schemes to introduce texture, heritage craftsmanship, and global warmth.

Maintain the item by keeping it away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity to prevent the wood from warping and the delicate inlay adhesives from failing. Clean gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without liquid polish.
