Description

A smart and very well made antique leather and mahogany Gainsborough armchair. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1900-1910 period.

The quality is superb, this is a nice early model with a gorgeous patina. The leather has just the right amount of wear and has a lovely colour tone, we have had this revived by our leather restorer.

The mahogany has also been re-polished, this is in very good condition for its age, with just some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Gainsborough armchair is a wide, upholstered armchair with short open arms, originating in 18th-century England during the Georgian era, traditionally designed for writing desks or parlours.

These chairs are typically constructed from solid mahogany frames with traditional mortise and tenon joints, upholstered in hand-dyed leather, and secured with individual brass tack or stud detailing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the timber grain, hand-cut joinery, type of upholstery webbing, wear patterns on the leather, and traditional hand-hammered brass tacks rather than modern staples.

Pair the chair with a minimalist contemporary desk, place it as an accent piece in a study, or contrast its traditional dark leather tones with neutral walls and modern abstract artwork.

Maintain the leather by applying specialist wax or leather conditioner periodically to prevent cracking, and dust the mahogany frame with a soft, dry cloth while avoiding direct sunlight.
