Balloon back chairs emerged during the Victorian era, gaining popularity in the mid-19th century as a refinement of earlier Regency and Rococo Revival designs, characterised by their distinctive continuous curved backrest.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like walnut or mahogany, featuring steam-bent wood for the curved frames, hand-carved details, and traditional stuffed upholstery over webbed bases.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as mortise and tenon frames, hand-turned or fluted front legs, aged patina on the wood, and traditional natural stuffing materials beneath the upholstery.

They can be integrated into contemporary dining spaces to provide a contrasting historical element, paired with a minimalist modern table, or used as occasional seating in a bedroom or hallway.

Preservation requires keeping wooden frames away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping or cracking, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and using gentle vacuuming or professional cleaning for the upholstery.
