Description

A stunning antique Regency gilt wood over mantle mirror. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-40’s period.

The quality is outstanding, this has a beautiful and quite unusual design. There is an impressive overhanging cornice, the frieze below has beautiful carved gilt mounts of floral rosettes, coats of arms and a wonderful shell in the centre. The sides have neo classical columns with more fine caving at the top, middle and bottom. The mirror has a bevelled edge and only some extremely minor wear to the silvered backing near the edges.

This is in excellent condition for its age, with just the right amount of patina and wear.

Regency style spans the early 19th century, heavily influenced by classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs, characterised by symmetry, architectural framing, and neoclassical ornamentation.

These frames were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or gesso-coated hardwoods, then water-gilded or oil-gilded with genuine gold leaf applied over a bole layer.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period characteristics such as hand-carved details, old plate glass with slight foxing or imperfections, and traditional construction methods like pegged joinery on the reverse.

Placing a historical gilt mirror above a contemporary fireplace or minimalist console creates a striking juxtaposition that adds depth, light, and architectural interest to a room.

Gilt surfaces are extremely fragile and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, abrasive chemicals, or excessive moisture.
