FAQs

Carved wooden boxes and caskets have historical origins dating back centuries, often utilised for storing precious documents, jewellery, or religious relics. Master craftsmen employed intricate relief carving techniques to depict biblical scenes, mythological tales, or heraldic motifs, reflecting the artistic styles of their respective eras.

Traditional antique boxes were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, yew, walnut, or fruitwood. Joinery often involved dovetail corners, pegged joints, and hand-carved panels, complemented by forged iron or brass hardware such as hinges, escutcheons, and carrying handles.

Authentication involves examining the tool marks, timber shrinkage, patina, and wear patterns consistent with age. Genuine period pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, consistent oxidation of the wood, and high-relief carving details that show natural variations absent in modern machine-made replicas.

An antique carved box serves as a focal point when placed on a mantelpiece, coffee table, or console, providing textural contrast against contemporary minimalism. It can function as a standalone decorative object or a sophisticated container for small daily essentials.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and avoiding direct sunlight to prevent the timber from drying, cracking, or fading. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of appropriate conservation-grade wax helps maintain the natural finish without damaging the patina.
