Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Japanese lacquerware, known as urushi, is crafted by applying multiple coats of sap from the lacquer tree onto a wooden base, creating a durable, glossy finish that is often decorated with gold dust, metal powders, or inlaid mother-of-pearl.

These boxes are typically constructed from lightweight woods such as hinoki cypress or cedar, coated with natural urushi lacquer, and frequently adorned with mother-of-pearl raden inlay, tortoiseshell, or delicate metal fittings.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit fine hand-painted details, natural age-related crazing or fine surface cracking in the lacquer, traditional joinery, and the use of genuine shell inlay rather than plastic or synthetic resin substitutes.

An antique lacquer box can be styled as a focal point on a coffee table, console, or dressing table, offering a contrasting tactile texture against modern marble, glass, or neutral wood surfaces while functioning as discrete storage.

Lacquerware should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading and drying out, dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and maintained in an environment with stable humidity to avoid warping or cracking the wooden substrate.
