FAQs

Ladder back chairs feature horizontal slats across the backrest and date back centuries, becoming widely popular in British and American country homes during the 18th century. The addition of rocking rails evolved from vernacular craftsmanship, designed to provide comfort and gentle movement.

These chairs were typically constructed using local native hardwoods such as ash, elm, oak, or fruitwood, often featuring turned posts and hand-woven rush or split-cane seats. Joinery relied on traditional mortise and tenon techniques secured with wooden pegs.

Authentication involves examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, patina, and hand-turned details consistent with period craftsmanship. Genuine older pieces often exhibit natural wear patterns, handmade joinery without modern fasteners, and subtle asymmetries from manual turning.

This piece works well as a textural contrast in contemporary settings, paired with neutral textiles, textured wool throws, or placed by a fireplace to add warmth and historical character.

Maintain the timber by applying microcrystalline wax sparingly and avoiding direct sunlight or central heating vents that dry out wood and rush. The woven seat should be kept clean using a soft brush attachment and protected from excessive moisture.
