Description

A George 111 Open Arm Painted Elbow Chair, Late 18th Century.

Attributed to Gillows by impeccable authority.

An enchanting George 111, 18th century painted elbow chair featuring 3 layers of paint from original cream, later green and finally a brown paint layer which has later blistered and caramelised in areas, structurally excellent.

A handsome elbow chair of exquisite proportions, possibly fruit or yew wood which started life or soon after painted cream which was later painted green, popular in the Regency era and then again brown, probably during the Victorian period, each layer is visible.

The chair is very original and very useable, please note a replaced single stretcher which was probably replaced during the 19th century for a straight timber.

We are undecided whether to keep as it is or consign to the workshop to remove the brown paint layer or remain as is but so far we have just consigned to workshop to conserve and preserve the appearance and wax.., until then available as it is, an exceptional chair.

The chair sits well, stable and no worm, a very useable day to day or decorative occasional chair.

The George III period spanned from 1760 to 1820, encompassing various design movements from Palladianism to Regency, generally characterised by refined proportions, craftsmanship, and a transition from heavy mahogany to lighter woods and painted finishes.

Cabinet makers typically utilised native hardwoods such as beech, elm, ash, and oak, often incorporating mortise and tenon joinery, solid timber seats, and hand-applied painted or japanned surfaces.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, historical patina, traditional joinery methods, and wear patterns consistent with age, alongside the absence of modern machine-cut fasteners.

An antique painted chair works effectively as a standalone accent piece in contemporary spaces, contrasting cleanly against neutral walls or providing historical depth to minimalist room schemes.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the painted finish, dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax where appropriate.
