FAQs

Victorian overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit upon the mantelpiece, serving to reflect firelight and amplify light within nineteenth-century drawing rooms.

These pieces typically utilised hardwood substrates finished with an ebonised coating to imitate ebony, complemented by hand-applied parcel-gilt detailing and bevelled glass plates.

Authentic pieces often feature hand-cut sheet glass with subtle imperfections, traditional joinery at the frame corners, and aged backing boards secured with period fixings.

Positioning the mirror above a fireplace or low sideboard anchors the room, creating a strong focal point that contrasts traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalist furnishings.

Clean the glass carefully with a lint-free cloth and neutral glass cleaner, avoiding direct contact with the ebonised wood and delicate gilt highlights to prevent abrasion.
