This eighteenth century wall mirror dates from circa 1780 and exemplifies the rococo style. It is made from giltwood, gesso and glass with a gold finish. The elaborate frame displays a shell and leaf pediment, a rocaille scrolled top, rising bullrushes emerging from a leaf-decorated cartouche at the base, and a tapering body housing the original foxed glass plate. The carved decoration includes acanthus leaf cresting and C-scrolls. The piece measures 94 cm high, 50 cm wide and 15 cm deep. It works well in a home today when hung above a sideboard in a living room, hallway or dining room to add a decorative element to an interior wall.

Giltwood mirrors from the 18th century are defined by hand-carved timber frames coated in gesso and finished with gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques. Decorative elements frequently featured ornate Rococo, Baroque, or Neoclassical motifs such as acanthus leaves, scrollwork, and elaborate cresting.

These mirrors were constructed using softwoods like pine or lime wood for detailed carving, layered with a plaster-like gesso base and red or yellow bole clay. Microscopic sheets of gold leaf were burnished onto the surface, surrounding early glass plates made using silvering or mercury processes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery marks on the reverse timber backing, uneven surface texture, and natural wear where the gold leaf has rubbed away to reveal underlying red or yellow bole. The glass plate often shows foxing, desilverization, or subtle distortion characteristic of historic mercury glass manufacturing.

Position the mirror as a focal point above a contemporary sideboard, console, or mantelpiece to create visual contrast. Pairing ornate gilded detailing with minimalist wall paint colours or contemporary artwork highlights the craftsmanship of the frame.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays that dissolve water gilding and damage gesso. Clean the mirror plate separately using a damp cloth, ensuring liquid does not seep behind the frame edges.
