Originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, overmantel mirrors were specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace, serving both a decorative purpose and a functional one by reflecting light into the room.

Authentic period pieces typically feature a hand-carved wooden frame, often made of pine or hardwood, coated in gesso and finished with applied gold leaf or gilt paint. The glass panels are usually hand-silvered and feature bevelled edges or signs of historical oxidisation.

Authentication involves inspecting the backboards, fixings, and the composition of the gesso layer. Genuine older mirrors often display irregularities in the glass, foxing, hand-cut joinery, and wear to the gilt surface that reveals the red bole underneath.

Placing an ornate gilt mirror in a contemporary room creates a striking focal point through the contrast of old and new. It can be mounted directly above a fireplace or propped on a low surface to bounce natural light around the space.

Preservation requires dusting the carved frame gently with a soft, dry brush and avoiding chemical cleaning agents that can strip the delicate gold leaf. The mirror glass should be cleaned sparingly using a microfibre cloth and a neutral glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly to the surface.
