FAQs

The Savonarola chair is a type of folding armchair originating in Italy during the Renaissance, named after the 15th-century Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola. It developed from earlier X-frame curule seat designs and became popular again during the 19th-century revival periods.

These chairs are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut or beech, featuring interlocking curved slats that form an X-frame structure. Many examples incorporate intricate wood carving, bone inlay, or marquetry details.

Authentic period pieces display traditional joinery techniques, natural patina appropriate to their age, and hand-carved or hand-inlaid details rather than modern mechanical fastening or synthetic adhesives.

These sculptural armchairs function effectively as accent seating in a study or living room, where their distinct profile and historical ornamentation can be appreciated without cluttering the floor plan.

Preservation involves keeping the wooden frame away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent warping or splitting, applying occasional appropriate wax polish, and avoiding moisture on exposed wood surfaces.
